NEW CLASS

the modern puppy – for pups 8 – 16 weeks of age (at class start date). if puppy chooses to attend without socialization days (see below), starting age may be up to 20 weeks of age

the modern puppy is our newest puppy program created for maximum flexibility and safety, in a time when meeting in person is not possible or recommended. this integrated ONLINE training and socialization program allows puppy parents the opportunity to train your puppies in the quiet and safety of your own home, with our instruction, guidance and support.

the modern puppy also provides an important socialization opportunity in an intimate, sterile and safe environment, with recommended protocols on social distancing practiced with utmost detail and concern.

what will you receive in this six-week program?

-weekly videos demonstrating the important life skills puppies need to know: sit, down, stay, leave it, loose leash walking, and much more

-video guidance on potty/crate training, tools to survive that all important (and painful) puppy nipping phase, and any challenge that may pop up during this early life stage

-weekly assignments provided in writing, for easy study and reference

-three 4-hour socialization and play sessions at dog’s best friend, at which time puppies will learn to interact appropriately with other puppies their own age, as well as rebecca’s adult golden retrievers, who provide calm dog/dog lessons and direction*

*play sessions are scheduled based on puppy’s temperament, taking careful consideration into which puppies will be the right match, allowing for the most positive experience possible. play sessions will be limited to 2 “modern puppies” per session, integrated with our puppy’s best start puppies. these sessions must be completed within one week of the final question/answer session described below. these are not skills sessions. the focus is solely on puppy interaction, play and enrichment

-if puppy does not live locally, or cannot meet health requirements, we offer the class, excluding socialization days, at a lower price (see below)

-three group question/answer sessions to review and clarify anything from the above*

*q and a session times/dates determined once four puppies have registered in a particular program cycle. sessions to be held weekday evenings. session recordings will be made available to those who may not be able to attend.

-video review of the covered skills, culminating in your puppy’s first graduate diploma

-flexible start dates

a few notes on health:

your puppy’s health is our number one concern, therefore all puppies must meet the following requirements in order to schedule/attend their socialization days.

all of the items below are mandatory and must be received at least 24 hours prior to socialization day — no exceptions.

-our veterinary health form completed and signed by your vet (provided upon registration)

-one set of vaccinations 7 days prior to the first socialization session

-proof of a clean fecal test

-puppy must be in their new home for at least one week

most puppies learn to socialize easily, but on some rare occasions, the group environment is too stressful/scary for the puppy. if a puppy shows excessive signs of fear/stress and is not able to function in the play sessions, they will be removed from the socialization play sessions, and alternate arrangements for socialization will be discussed with puppy parent.

*play sessions are scheduled based on each teen’s temperament, and will be limited to one “zooming teen” per session, integrated with our puppy’s best start puppies. the play session must be completed within one week of the final question/answer session described below. these are not skills sessions. the focus is solely on dog/dog interactions, play and communication. these sessions are built for teens who are social and friendly. they would not be a good match for dogs who are fearful or aggressive

-if teen does not live locally, or cannot meet health requirements, we offer the class, excluding socialization days, at a lower price (see below)

puppy 1 – puppy playschool – for pups 8 – 16 weeks of age (at class start date)

no live puppy classes at this time. please see “the modern puppy”

puppy playschool was created just for pups between the ages of 8-16 weeks (read why you should begin classes early). in this one-hour, off-leash training and socialization class, your pups will learn the cues: sit, down, come when called, and much more. most importantly, your puppy will learn to socialize appropriately with other friendly pups and humans, and will learn how to happily accept grooming, touch, and handling by strangers.

you and your pup will work toward earning an akc s.t.a.r. (socialization, training, activity, responsibility) certificate, showing the world that you are a responsible pup parent and your puppy is starting life as a well-mannered member of the community. the perfect foundation for moving into our akc canine good citizen class!

by passing the akc s.t.a.r. test at the end of the class, you’ll receive an application for enrollment in the akc-sponsored program, a medal to display, a listing in the s.t.a.r. records and a puppy package with a certificate, handbook, discounts and subscription to their training email newsletter. class is held in a sterile, clean and safe environment with other healthy* (vet-approved) rascals.

this class has a set curriculum, therefore we cannot accommodate drop-ins, or “pay as you go” puppies. registration for the entire six week class is required in order to save your pup’s spot in the class.

*it is extremely important to have your puppy checked out by a vet within 48 hours of arriving to your home, whether adopted from a rescue organization, shelter, or breeder. parasites like giardia are common, and your puppy may not show symptoms. therefore, be sure to take a fecal sample in at the time of this vet visit, so treatment can be started immediately (parasites are extremely contagious). the presence of parasites is the number one obstacle to starting puppy playschool that we see.

puppy socialization society – become a v.i.p. – very important paws

dog’s best friend’s puppy socialization society is our brand new socialization club just for puppies between the ages of 8-20 weeks.

proper, safe, fun socialization* and enrichment** are so incredibly important to the healthy upbringing of the little ones. it is crucial to raising a happy, well adjusted dog who can go out into our world and feel comfortable. healthy puppy socialization will help your puppy become the best dog they can be.

dbf’s puppy socialization society is not a training program (works well in conjunction with our puppy classes and programs). we will not be teaching skills, though they will be practiced and reinforced, we will be focusing on proper interactions with other pups, humans and elements in the environment.

in addition to socialization, we will discuss puppy challenges such as mouthiness, potty training, barking, etc.

our resident puppy trainer, cooper, a friendly golden retriever, will aid in the teaching. in his calm, soft, clear way, he’ll let your puppies know when they are being inappropriate and will help them learn good dog/dog manners.

the paw perks of becoming a puppy socialization society v.i.p.?

~puppy members of the socialization society will receive unlimited attendance in our “puppy play ‘n’ learn” parties, held on friday and saturday afternoons: puppy play ‘n’ learn party.

~by joining the puppy socialization society, we will be getting to know your puppy well, so after attending two “play ‘n’ learn” sessions, if your puppy is comfortable, you may drop your puppy off to attend the one-hour “play ‘n’ learn” without you. we’ll basically “puppy-sit” your rascal for an hour, as they romp, play and learn. how great is that?

~you will receive a discount card, giving you 15% off of all classes and services, until your puppy is five months of age.

~your socialization society puppy v.i.p. will be eligible to join our “puppy playhouse” program (see above. cost of puppy playhouse is not included in the puppy socialization society membership fee).

~you will receive free access to our “what to expect when you’re expecting…a puppy” webinar ($30 value).

in order to become a v.i.p. of dbf’s puppy socialization society, our mandatory veterinary health form is required, and will be provided at time of enrollment.

your puppy’s membership to the puppy socialization society will end on your pup’s five month birthday, when they officially become a teenager (oh my, time to check out our teen classes).

*what is socialization? the process of introducing a puppy to the world in a way that will help him be confident and unafraid of people, places and things that he will encounter throughout his life. (ppg, 2015) watch a socialization session at work.

**what is enrichment? the principle that seeks to enhance the quality of a puppy’s care by identifying and providing the environmental stimuli necessary for optimal psychological and physiological well-being. (shepherdson, 1998) watch an enrichment session at work.
