Dogs Best Friend!

akc canine good citizen

canine good citizen (cgc) is an akc certification program that is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. The cgc program is an advanced training class that stresses responsible pet ownership and basic good manners for dogs. all dogs who pass the 10-step cgc test may receive a certificate from the american kennel club, building the foundation for dogs who want to progress into therapy work. as you teach the cgc skills, you’ll discover the joys of training your dog and will enhance the bond between you and your pooch.

if you have a puppy, we recommend starting with the akc s.t.a.r. puppy program, part of our puppy 1 – puppy playschool and our puppy 2 – the pawlished pup.

prerequisite: all dogs must have basic obedience skills such as “sit” and “down” and must be friendly and well-adjusted. prong, choke and shock collars are not permitted. all dogs must have proof of current vaccinations or present titer results; please bring to first class.

important note:

class fees must be paid at time of registration in order to secure your pup’s spot in the class and must be paid in full at time of registration. we do not accept “one-week-at-a-time” payments. due to the importance of continuity in this class, we cannot offer make-up classes for this workshop.

akc community canine and therapy dog preparation class

akc community canine is the most advanced class in our therapy dog path. your dog will learn therapy dog skills in real-world environments rather than in a park or ring, proving competence in challenging situations such as:

  • walking calmly past distractions without pulling
  • sitting and staying in a small group of people with dogs
  • leaving food on the ground
  • staying until called while you enter or exit a doorway or narrow passageway

we will also teach your dog to happily accept touching, grooming, and sloppy petting by strangers. important skills for any dog who dreams of becoming a therapy dog.

successful completion of this class and passing all 10 test items earns your pup the title cgca.

to join the class, your dog must be an akc canine good citizen and must have an akc number of one of three types (note: all dogs, including mixed breeds, are eligible for an akc number):

  1. akc registration number. your purebred dog has “papers.” you would have received these from the breeder.
  2. a pal number (“purebred alternative listing”) for purebred dogs of akc breeds without papers (such as rescue or shelter dogs).
  3. an akc canine partners number for mixed breed dogs, or dogs otherwise ineligible for akc registration such as purebreds from other countries that are not akc recognized breeds. all dogs can enroll in the akc canine partners program.

for questions about akc registration, please contact akc customer service.

all dogs must have proof of current vaccinations or present titer results; please bring to first class.

good decision dogs *new class*

have you ever envied therapy and service dogs, admired how they just seem to make positive choices, naturally? they walk close to their humans with loose leashes, rather than pulling them down the street. they have amazing eye contact with their handlers, and they settle nicely at restaurants. all without their person ever saying a word?

well, it’s no accident. they have been taught to make good choices, on their own, without needing to be given a cue (though they’ll comply if asked).

if you long to have a dog who behaves like a therapy/service dog*, this is the class for you. we created it just for ambitious dog parents.

in this class your pup will be guided to help make smart/positive decisions, without receiving cues, including leaving items on floor (food) alone, staying on all four paws for pets, settling by your side at cafe’s and much, much more.

this is an intermediate class. basic skills such as sit, down, and come when called are required. prerequisite: dbf’s pawlished pup, basic manners, or toby’s teens. all students interested in this class, who have not attended one of the above mentioned classes, will be asked to schedule a consultation before the class begins at the regular dbf hourly private rate.

due to the nature of the class, it is not recommended for reactive dogs, and dogs who are still learning their “quiet” cue. please give us a call to discuss an alternative class.

*though this class will strengthen the skills that service dogs have mastered, it does not culminate in your dog becoming a “service dog.” if you have need for a service dog, please contact the ada for assistance – ada.gov

puppy 1 – puppy playschool

puppy playschool was created just for pups between the ages of 8-16 weeks (read why you should begin classes early). in this one-hour, off-leash training and socialization class, your pups will learn the cues: sit, down, come when called, and much more. most importantly, your puppy will learn to socialize appropriately with other friendly pups and humans, and will learn how to happily accept grooming, touch, and handling by strangers.

you and your pup will work toward earning an akc s.t.a.r. (socialization, training, activity, responsibility) certificate, showing the world that you are a responsible pup parent and your puppy is starting life as a well-mannered member of the community. the perfect foundation for moving into our akc canine good citizen class!

by passing the akc s.t.a.r. test at the end of the class, you’ll receive an application for enrollment in the akc-sponsored program, a medal to display, a listing in the s.t.a.r. records and a puppy package with a certificate, handbook, discounts and subscription to their training email newsletter. class is held in a sterile, clean and safe environment with other healthy* (vet-approved) rascals.

this class has a set curriculum, therefore we cannot accommodate drop-ins, or “pay as you go” puppies. registration for the entire six week class is required in order to save your pup’s spot in the class.

*it is extremely important to have your puppy checked out by a vet within 48 hours of arriving to your home, whether adopted from a rescue organization, shelter, or breeder. parasites like giardia are common, and your puppy may not show symptoms. therefore, be sure to take a fecal sample in at the time of this vet visit, so treatment can be started immediately (parasites are extremely contagious). the presence of parasites is the number one obstacle to starting puppy playschool that we see.

important note:

your puppy’s health is our number one concern, therefore all puppies must meet the following requirements to attend class.

all of the items are mandatory and must be received at least 24 hours prior to class — no exceptions.

  • our veterinary health form completed and signed by your vet (provided upon registration)
  • one set of vaccinations 7 days prior to the first class
  • proof of a clean fecal test
  • puppy must be in their new home for at least one week

most puppies learn to socialize easily, but sometimes the class environment is too stressful. if a puppy shows excessive signs of stress and is not able to function in the class, they will be removed from class and redirected to private socialization sessions with a well-adjusted and healthy adult dog.

please contact us with questions/concerns.

puppy 2 – the pawlished pup

designed for our puppy 1 – puppy playschool graduates. this intermediate class was created to bridge the gap between the puppy playschool and the akc canine good citizen class. we will build upon each puppy’s basic manners skills, and help them acquire the expertise to move to the next level, their canine good citizen certificate

advanced obedience skills such as stay, leave it with high value items, come when called with distractions, loose leash walking, and much more, will be honed.

with play sessions at the end of each class, we’ll continue to build a strong socialization foundation, and take each puppy’s self control to the next level.

puppies and their humans join us starting with the first class.
