Dogs Best Friend!

private training

we tailor each private training program to you and your dog’s unique needs. no physical “corrections,” choke or prong collars, yelling, reprimands or fear-based techniques. our positive reinforcement training helps create calm, confident, happy dogs.

we can help you with:

  • basic manners – sit, recall (come), down, stay, loose-leash walking/heel, leave it, drop it, off
  • leash reactivity – helping you deal with your dogs that lunge, bark, growl at other dogs, skateboards, people, cars, while on leash
  • dealing with separation anxiety and destructive behaviors
  • puppies – housebreaking (crate training), socialization, chewing, confidence-building
  • becoming a therapy dog – honing those basic skills with the goal of passing your therapy dog test
  • friend-finding – help your pup make some new pals with our facilitated playdates

puppy’s best start program

the first months of a puppy’s life are by far the most important. what the puppy experiences, and how he is treated, can determine what kind of dog he will eventually become.

as a trainer, most of the adult dog issues I am hired to help with (fear, aggression, reactivity to other dogs, troubles walking, barking, fear of kids, anxiety at the vet’s office) could have been prevented altogether if the dog had only been given the proper, positive foundation.

for many years, clients have been asking me if I could help provide that important day-to-day foundation work for their puppies, and now that dbf has her own home, the answer is a resounding, “yes.”

i am so very excited to now offer: puppy’s best start – a day training and socialization program for puppies

this is not be a dog day care facility, where puppies interact with too many dogs of different temperaments, that can cause stress and anxiety in a young puppy. or worse, give the puppy a negative experience, that can impact upon them for the rest of their lives.

this is not a training mill facility where the puppies spend most of their day locked in a row of crates with little, to no, qualified training guidance.

all training is done by rebecca, owner of dbf, using only force-free, positive reinforcement training.

we will only be taking a maximum of three puppies at any given time. so each pup will receive the special attention and training they will need to truly create the proper foundation to help them grow up to be a well-behaved, confident, loving adult dog.

puppies spend four hours per day with us, four days per week. we do not offer full day training/care, as we believe it is too stressful for a puppy to be away from their home for an entire day. we have found that four hours is the perfect amount of time to be with us.

so how does this work?

what your puppy’s day will look like

each puppy’s day will be filled with paws-on learning, socialization, and enrichment, divided in to:

    • training time to teach skills: sit, down, stay, off, come when called, leave it, drop it, go to your spot, walking nicely on leash, and whatever else the puppy’s family deems necessary for their home.
    • socialization sessions to teach the puppy how to safely and properly interact with other puppies (healthy puppies enrolled in dbf’s puppy’s best start program, and puppy playschool), and focused sessions with cooper, our adult golden retriever, who has a gentle, but effective, way of teaching puppies how to appropriately and safely interact with other dogs.
    • enrichment time to positively acclimate the puppy to surfaces, touch, odors, textures, all the things that the puppy will interact with in their life.
    • relaxation and quiet time to teach puppies to settle in their exercise pens/crates, feel safe when they are on their own, and rest between activities, which is so very important to the puppy’s over all health and well being.

during the above mentioned sessions, we will also work on potty training, teaching puppies to play with humans calmly/nicely, and guiding them through that all important (and painful) puppy nipping phase.

preparing your puppy for home

when your puppy’s program is complete, they will receive another 60-minute house visit to help the family continue the pup’s education, and build on the skills they have learned.

*due to the fact that we limit our puppy’s best start program to three puppies maximum, at any given time, space is very limited. 50% deposit is required in order to save your pup’s spot in the “pbs” program. please contact us well in advance (3-4 weeks) if you would like to lock up a spot for your little one.

what is socialization? the process of introducing a puppy to the world in a way that will help him be confident and unafraid of people, places and things that he will encounter throughout his life. (PPG, 2015) watch a socialization session at work

what is enrichment? the principle that seeks to enhance the quality of a puppy’s care by identifying and providing the environmental stimuli necessary for optimal psychological and physiological well-being. (Shepherdson, 1998) watch an enrichment session at work.
