a scratch is not just a scratch

a common stress signal in dogs is the “body scratch.”

i often see this in puppy sessions when the puppy is trying really hard to figure something out. there’s a misunderstanding that “oh, puppy just has an itch,” but it’s not always a coincidence.

do dogs just get itches? sure, but watch the context.

if your dog stops to scratch in the middle of a walk, class, while meeting new dogs, while experiencing something unknown, or in a challenging training session at home, take a moment to give your rascal a break.

they may be feeling stressed, and need a few moments to relax and regroup.

a scratch is not just a scratch.
